Rome Uncovered: Ancient Secrets & Essential Travel Tips

Rome, Italy’s eternal capital, is a living open-air museum. Walking through its streets feels like stepping back 2,000 years in time. From the mighty gladiatorial arenas to the world’s best pasta, Rome is an unforgettable adventure. Here is my insider guide to the city!

1. The Landmarks You Can’t Miss

  • The Pantheon: A spectacular ancient Roman temple with a massive concrete dome that has a giant hole (the oculus) right in the middle. It is the best-preserved ancient building in Rome and completely free to enter!
  • Trastevere District: Skip the touristy restaurants around the Colosseum and cross the river to this charming, bohemian neighborhood. Its narrow, ivy-covered alleyways are packed with authentic local life and tiny family-run trattorias.

2. Rome Fun Facts

  • The Secret Passageway: There is a secret, fortified above-ground stone tunnel called the Passetto di Borgo that connects the Vatican to the nearby castle, Castel Sant’Angelo. It was built so the Pope could escape on foot if the Vatican was ever attacked!
  • Free Water Everywhere: You will see hundreds of small, historic cast-iron drinking fountains called Nasoni (big noses) spraying fresh water all over the city sidewalks. The water is ice-cold, perfectly clean, and 100% free to drink.

3. The Food Scene

  • The Four Roman Pastas: True Roman cuisine relies on four classic pasta dishes: Carbonara, Cacio e Pepe, Amatriciana, and Gricia. Real Roman Carbonara never uses cream—only egg yolks, Pecorino Romano cheese, guanciale (pork cheek), and black pepper!
  • Pizza al Taglio: For a quick and cheap lunch, look for bakeries selling pizza “by the slice” (al taglio). You simply point to the pizza you want, tell them how big a piece you need, and they weigh it and charge you by the kilo.

4. Practical Travel Tips

  • Book Months in Advance: You cannot just show up to the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums anymore. Tickets sell out weeks or months in advance, so buy your tickets online from the official websites before you even pack your bags.
  • Dress Appropriately for Churches: Rome’s historic churches (including St. Peter’s Basilica) have strict dress codes. Both men and women must have their knees and shoulders completely covered to enter, or the guards will turn you away.
