Denmark beyond Copenhagen: Hidden Gems & Culinary Secrets
When people think of Denmark, they often think of Copenhagen’s fine dining. But the real magic happens when you travel across the country to discover cozy local eateries, hidden coastal spots, and unique city secrets. Here is my personal guide to a different side of Denmark!
1. Aalborg: Street Food & Rooftop Views
Aalborg has evolved into a paradise for food lovers, mixing old industrial charm with modern street food culture.
- The Food Secret: Visit “Aalborg Street Food” located in an old shipyard building by the marina. It is the best place to get everything from traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød) to international tapas at great prices.
- Hidden Gem: Head to the top of the Salling department store. Their rooftop terrace offers a terrifying but thrilling glass skywalk extended over the busy shopping street, along with a cozy cafe.
2. Hals: The Harbor Treats & Summer Hygge
Hals is the epitome of Danish summer life, where locals go to disconnect and enjoy the sea breeze.
- The Food Secret: You cannot visit Hals without getting a giant Danish ice cream waffle (gammeldags isvaffel) down at the harbor. Look for the local ice cream shops serving homemade “gufe” (a sweet, fluffy marshmallow-like topping).
- Hidden Gem: Just a short drive from the town center, you find the pristine white sand beaches of Bisnap. It is incredibly peaceful and perfect for amber hunting after a windy storm.
3. Aarhus: The Latin Quarter & Secret Courtyards
Aarhus delivers an incredible culinary punch with a very relaxed, youthful vibe.
- The Food Secret: Walk down the narrow cobblestone street called “Møllestien”. Right around the corner in the Latin Quarter, you will find hidden courtyards where local bakeries serve freshly baked sourdough buns with organic Danish cheese.
- Hidden Gem: The Greenhouse at the Botanical Gardens. It is completely free to enter and features a massive tropical dome where you can walk among exotic plants, butterflies, and hear tropical birds while escaping the Danish weather.
4. Odense: Storms Pakhus & Fairytale Gardens
Odense is no longer just a quiet historic town—it has a booming social and culinary scene.
- The Food Secret: “Storms Pakhus” is the city’s lively street food market. It is located in an old warehouse and is famous for its creative food stalls and local Fynsk craft beer bars.
- Hidden Gem: Right behind the Hans Christian Andersen Museum lies “Eventyrhaven” (The Fairytale Garden). It features beautiful bridges, a hidden river view, and a massive statue of the author surrounded by flowers.
5. Copenhagen: Torvehallerne & The Secret Library Garden
Beyond the famous Nyhavn, Copenhagen hides some of the quietest and most delicious spots in Europe.
- The Food Secret: Skip the tourist trap restaurants and head straight to “Torvehallerne” near Nørreport station. It is a premium covered food market where you can try high-end smørrebrød at “Hallernes Smørrebrød” or fresh seafood delicacies.
- Hidden Gem: “Bibliotekshaven” (The Library Garden). Located right between Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Library, this hidden courtyard is one of the quietest spots in the capital, featuring a beautiful fountain and lazy benches.
