North Jutland has a very special place in my heart. After moving here, I fell completely in love with the dramatic, raw nature and the cozy coastal towns that epitomize a true Danish summer.
Whether I am exploring these vast landscapes on a quiet solo trip to find peace, or packing up the car with my four children for a fun family beach day, North Jutland never fails to amaze me.
For my book project, “The Denmark I Want to Remember,” these are the ultimate coastal highlights you cannot miss:
- Råbjerg Mile: The Shifting Desert
Imagine standing in the middle of a massive sand desert right here in Denmark! Råbjerg Mile is a spectacular moving sand dune that shifts up to 18 meters every single year. It feels like stepping onto another planet. It is the perfect spot for a long, windy walk, and the kids love running up and down the giant hills of sand.

- Blokhus & Løkken: The Iconic White Beach Houses When summer arrives, the endless white sandy beaches of Blokhus and Løkken turn into pure magic. What makes these beaches completely unique are the rows of classic, historic white beach houses standing neatly against the wild North Sea. Walking along the coast with the salty breeze in your hair is the ultimate way to experience the Nordic elements.
- The Perfect Reward: Pizza by the Coast After a long, active day of exploring the windy dunes and splashing in the waves, there is only one way to wrap up the adventure: a delicious, warm pizza! Sitting together, sharing a meal, and watching the sunset over the ocean is the very definition of Danish “hygge.”
North Jutland teaches you to appreciate both the wild power of nature and the simple joy of good food with the people you love.
💡 Quick Travel Tips & Funfacts
- Råbjerg Mile (The Moving Desert): This is Denmark’s largest shifting sand dune and one of the biggest in Europe. It contains over 4 million cubic meters of sand and moves up to 18 meters northeast every single year! Scientists estimate it will completely swallow the main highway to Skagen in about 100 years.
- Råbjerg Mile Visitor Tip: It is completely free to visit and open 24/7. Always pack a pair of sunglasses—not just for the sun, but because the wind can whip the sand around quite aggressively.
- Løkken & Blokhus (The Beach Highways): These beaches are entirely unique because it is legally allowed to drive your car directly onto the hard-packed sand right next to the waves. Local Danes love to park right by the water on windy days to drink hot coffee inside the warm car while watching the rough sea.
- The White Beach Houses: The iconic white cabins that line the coast are all privately owned. By local law, they are only allowed on the beach during the summer months (from May to September). Every autumn, the owners must haul them away so the harsh winter storms do not wash them out to sea.
